Freelancing is a very powerful way to make money online in Kenya. This works on the basis of outsourcing your skills and time to others who require them
Thousands upon thousands of companies are looking to outsource the jobs that they either can’t do or don’t have the time for.
You have likely seen me recommend outsourcing as a nice way to get ahead of yourself and generally speeding up your business development timeline. What if you could turn the tables around as that “Go-to” guy?
Freelancing as a model to make money online works on the premise that you have some specialized knowledge or skills and/or time. Among the skills you can get hired for as a freelancer are:
- Graphic design
- Web design
- Copy writing
- Customer support
- Programming
- Typing
- Research
- Writing
- Among others
There are broadly speaking two ways in which you can make freelancing as a way to make money online work for you here in Kenya:
1. Signing up at a freelancing site:
There are many online freelance job sites where you can search and bid for online jobs and among the most popular are:
Now, to get hired for projects on these freelancing sites, you basically need to bid for the ones you are interested in. The project owner will review your proposal against those of other interested providers and if he/she is impressed with your bid, then he will award the project to you.

Of course you won’t win every bid but you’ll win enough of them to make good money online. But that’s not even the best part. Get ready for something even more exciting…
You are very likely to find a client who becomes a long-term match for you. What does that mean to you? If you get such a client, you’ll be able to get lots of work from them in the future without having to undergo the bidding process. That’s, you’ll be working directly with them by then, sweet huh!
2. Starting your own online service website
A classical example in this category is a website/graphics design services. If you are good at website and/or graphics design, you can start your own online design service company to provide these services.
You can then attract targeted traffic to your site using such strategies as pay per click advertising, forum marketing, ezine advertising etc.
To get an insight into how you can make money online in Kenya using your own online service company, have a look at these sites:
The only downside to starting your own online service in Kenya is the limitation on receiving online payments. As you may already know there are currently no practical ways to receive worldwide payments from in Kenya.
The only viable solution is e-pesa and even then, it’s only usable in Kenya and East Africa. This means that unless you can open a bank account in a foreign country, you can’t reach to international clients.
In conclusion, freelancing is one of the easiest ways to make money online in Kenya. So, get busy bidding for projects on the freelancing networks.

Western union is ok to get paid if you trust the freelance job provider. However, be cautious as many internet scammers promise to send you money via western union.

Congratulations for taking a forward step William. There are lots of online freelancing jobs at freelancer.com and Kenyans can claim their share. You can even work from home as a freelancer.

hi kevin, i would like to know if anyone gets paid through moneybookers and how has been their experience. anyone from co-op bank?
December 23rd, 2010 at 12:31 am
Wambui, you can get money submitted to your moneybookers.com account by any other moneybookers.com user, then you can withdraw it to your account via wire transfer.
You can also withdraw the funds available in your freelancer.com account to moneybookers and then withdraw it from there via wire transfer.
Does that help?
All the best

Hey guys, this is a great post. i do freelancing and it is great. with the Kenyan situation of unemployment, i would advise graduates and anyone who has some skill to become a freelancer. but for those problems of getting your money, check out this http://paypalmoneykenya.blogspot.com/ and you will be glad there is a solution to the PayPal payment problem in Kenya. you can also read through some of the older blogs to get help if you are new at freelancing.

Yes Tandy, you get paid via moneybookers. Just provide your bank details in your moneybookers profile and the cash will be right there in your bank account when you withdraw it from moneybookers. The swift code of cooperative bank should be KCOOKENAXXX. Hope this helps.
Regards
Kevin

Hi Kevin,
I have been sent money to m moneybookers account and the issues is transferring the funds to my Equity bank account. They are asking me for verification.
Kindly assist me with the procedure to get the money transferred.
Regards.
Maureen.

You have to have a visa card to verify your account. Moneybookers will then withdraw a small random figure from your account and you have to verify the exact amount taken from your account. To do that you have to check with your bank.

freelancer is good, but i cant withdraw from moneybrooks to equity bank even after providing all the details they are asking for. Have visited my bank since moneybrooks keeps telling me to contact my bank for authorization. Its my first withdrawal and its 50 dollars. I use visa electron. why is moneybrooks not sending money to my account? equity said that i should not have a problem since i am the one being paid. i should just confirm when money has been sent. is there a limit i dont know about or whats up. I really need help on this one.
April 18th, 2011 at 3:44 am
To verify your account, you need to go to your bank and ask them to tell you the exact amount moneybookers.com withdrew from your account. The amount should specifically be given to you in dollars amount.

thanx a lot Kevin,
i would like to earn cash online but i have a question will the money i earn be sent to me through e pesa
June 9th, 2011 at 11:49 am
Yes you can use epesa to receive payments in Kenya and East Africa. You can also use PayPal to receive the payments but there is one drawback to it. You cannot withdraw the cash to a Kenyan bank. You can either withdraw it to a US bank or use it online. Hope that helps.

Come on guys. It is not easy to come up with something very unique and working especially from the American system with products like PayPal, but when you do, you can pat your back! PayPal does not work for Kenyan withdrawals, but I will tell you IT WORKS and it is proven.
If you doubt ask me again. The secret is not like that of cooking noodles. Noh! It is tougher but i can help with this so that anyone who wants can also withdraw funds from paypal locally. I will charge a small fee for my time and I am justified guys. Admin of this site can contact me for authenticity so that I prove first and the rest can follow.
I can start with my bank statement to prove that some money has been entering my account from paypal mmmh. Contact me and we cut this story short guys.
June 9th, 2011 at 2:07 pm
Hi Tim,
If you could assist that would be wonderful. I contacted PayPal and they told me that they are working with the local banks to find a solution to PayPal withdrawal issues in Kenya, yet they keep advertising that one can use PayPal in Kenya. Anyway, its business. So they told me I have to use and American bank to withdraw.
So now am stuck and would appreciate any help.
