This is part of an ongoing series of legitimate ways to make money online in Kenya. We’ve already discussed how to make money online in Kenya freelancing in a broad sense. Now let’s discuss how to make money online freelancing as a writer.
Now, if you don’t yet know or haven’t yet given it a thought rather, you can make a full living writing for the web. This article will explain how to go about it in establishing your writing career online, so stay with me.
You’ve probably heard that “Content is king online”. It’s the fuel that propel the internet and if you can supply it in its many variations and forms, from articles to videos and eBooks, you can get rewarded very generously for your efforts.
As demand for content grows, individuals, companies and business owners are increasingly turning online to look for writers to whom to outsource their writing needs. If you like writing, that’s where you come in.
There are basically 3 approaches to getting writing jobs on the internet for cash in Kenya:
1. Freelancing sites
You can get started making money online in Kenya off your writing skills and passion by signing up with the freelancing sites online.
There are many freelancing sites online today, but my favorite two that caters well for writers are:
- Elance.com
- Freelancer.com (formerly getafreelancer.com)
What happens is that companies with writing needs will list them on these sites for freelancers to bid on. They then choose a freelancer to undertake their task from those that bid on them
You’ll soon find that most writing tasks will involve writing articles on some given topics, but you’ll occasionally find tasks involving writing ebooks as a ghostwriter.
Although you won’t win every bid, you’ll win enough of them to make good money online and if you maintain good standards in your writing, you can attract repeat business from happy clients who come specifically looking for you, sweet huh!!
You can expect to earn an average of $5 per article you write.
2. Writing Focused sites
After careful thought, I’ve decided to separate this category of sites with from the first one even though they are very similar.
There is an ever increasing number of sites devoted specifically to connecting writers with people with writing tasks and needs.
What you essentially do is to sign up with these sites and once you are approved and get accepted into their teams, you can then undertake writing tasks listed on these sites. You’ll however be required to take a teat for the most of them.
To get you started here are afew of writing devoted sites:

3. Web 2.0 sites
Web 2.0 has seen the emergence of lots of possibilities. For example, a growing number of sites will pay you to write content on their systems based on actual performance of your articles.
Here are the two most popular ones:
To get started, simply sign up with these sites and set your profile. Then get wild writing on anything that interests you-yeah anything, including your yesterday’s dream. It’s not uncommon to make $5-$7 per article you submit to these sites and for the articles that the editors of theses sites are specifically looking for, you can make up to $200. Such topics will be be recommended for you by their system once you are logged into your account.
even though you can write on literally any topic of your interest, here are a few big winners that you might consider writing on:
- Real estate
- Weight loss
- Finance
- Travel
- Dating
- Golf
The only downside to writing for associatedcontent network in Kenya is that you’ll miss some bonuses available only to US citizans. They are however just small ones to get really bothered about; $5 here and $10 there that really don’t add up to anything substantial.
Otherwise, you can make good money writing articles for them. I don’t know about you, but I $100 per day may probably add to your bottom line.

Wow, This is another great post. You’ve really covered all of the freelance writing bases with this article and it was totally correct of you you put the different site’s into different categories. Most people neglect to do that.
One site I would like to add do you list of “devoted sites” is Demand Studios. I’m not sure if they cater to Kenyans, but it’s worth looking into.

Great post, but another great place to find writing jobs in Kenya are on craigslist. and the great part about craigslist and writing is that you don’t have to just write for people in Kenya, you can write for people in Russia, USA, Mexico and any where you want.

Linah, for freelancer.com, you can withdraw the money from your freelancer.com account via wire transfer to your Kenyan bank account.
You will however need a moneybookers.com account to send the money to first, then to your Kenya bank account.
There is also a feature called milestone payments on freelancer.com which will protect you as a freelancer by holding your money as milestone payments and when you are though, the system can then release the money into your freelancer.com account.
While in normal circumstances the project owner holds the money until you are through with the task as agreed, in milestone payment the cash is neither held by the project owner or the freelance writer or whatever service provider but by the freelancer.com system.

As to whether there are peak and off-peak seasons for writing jobs, it depends on your specialty. academic writing jobs have an off-peak season when students go home for long summer breaks.
If you are writing for the web however, you might not notice any changes in volume of projects posted as online businesses will always require content for their sites and for promotion purposes.

If UVOCORP can’t accept your application, then just go ahead and open an account with other academic writing websites. A black hat tactic used by some people is to buy an account from someone.

You can use PayPal in Kenya to receive payments. The only limitation to this is that you cannot withdraw the money into a Kenyan bank. You can either withdraw it to a U.S. bank or spend it online. All the best with your online writing journey.

Its true, making money online is for every one who has talent in writing. The fact that its now called and operating as freelance writing makes it more convenient to work online as a writer from any corner of the world. I know of a guy who earns over $4000 every two weeks through freelance writing and is paid via wire transfer. Let us write.

Hey Kenyans, everything you see online is not a scam. There are many reputable freelancing websites/platforms such as Elance, Odesk and even the UVOCORP that someone claimed to be a scam. I have accounts on both oDesk and Elance (i am a programmer) with a monthly income averaging 120K. However i want to break into writing, my motivation being envy (my friend makes 500K a month from writing, yes 500K)
